Book Reviews
Are you looking for an adventurous book for children? Then the book Pien en Pirat (Pien and Pirat) is highly recommended.
The front cover immediately shows how adventurous the story is, while not appearing too busy at the same time. The drawings in the book immerse you in the adventure of Pirat and Pien.
Pien is curious in the way you recognize in real children: she sees something, doesn't think too long, and goes. Pirat follows, sometimes bravely, sometimes hesitantly. This variation in characters makes their adventure fun to follow. Moreover, there's a good chance your child will recognize themselves in one of the two.
The beautiful illustrations are a real big plus. They are colourful, playful, and full of small things that children will immediately want to point out. This is not a book you just read aloud. Together with your child, you can leaf through it and constantly discover new things. And that makes it fun to read again. The book has no less than 44 pages and also features various activities, so you will enjoy the book for a long time.
The book is written and drawn by Ruben Olislagers. Text and image flow smoothly into each other and complement each other without too much explanation. He clearly has an eye for children's language and imagination. He invented many stories for his own children, including this one.
The pacing in the book is just right. Enough suspense to hold your attention, but also room to pause and look or laugh. Besides being simply enjoyable to admire, the book also has a message: the story shows that cooperation and friendship are more important than any treasure.
I certainly recommend the book and therefore give it 5 stars. It is suitable for children aged 3 to 7 years. Younger children can especially enjoy the drawings. Older children you can take along in the adventure by telling the story.
